Through decades of never-before-seen footage, Lil Baby makes his debut on the big screen as this documentary follows his journey from local hustler to becoming one of hip hops largest superstars. This documentary shares Lil Baby’s come-up from a unique and super-intimate angle.
Untrapped’s strongest point is its effort to put a human face on a young man who was long ago perceived a drug dealer and gangster.
Born into poor living conditions, Lil Baby was ambiguous about his situation as a small child. However, as he grew in age, so too did his desire to acquire the trappings and copious amounts of wealth. In the Southwest Atlanta neighborhood of Oakland City that he called home. Crime, poverty, gang violence and high incarceration rates were the norm.
For anyone to make it out of such circumstances is admirable. However, for Lil Baby, whose street popularity as a gangster and the fast money that comes with that lifestyle, the streets were his home.
It’s revealed that becoming a rapper wasn’t something Lil Baby wanted to do, but was eventually persuaded into it after serving a two years sentence on drug and gun charges at 18-years-old.
Lil Baby had little to say on the red carpet, he opened up a bit during the Q&A session, revealing that the first time he saw the complete film was just days earlier.
“The first time I seen it was this week. It made me drop a tear or two. It was around 5 o’clock in the morning. Me and two of the guys,” he said.
